Case Study: Microsoft Global Security Operations

In 2009, Microsoft Corporation selected WAVE for use in its Global Security Operations Centers (GSOC) in the United States, Europe and India. Three world-class 24/7 operations centers monitor, communicate and coordinate responses for more than 700 Microsoft sites worldwide and are mutually supportive with full failover capability at a moments notice.

Regional preferences in prior years had resulted in Microsoft deploying a number of different radio systems at its GSOC locations and Motorola MOTOTRBO was a more recent addition to the communications infrastructure.

As part of its GSOC capabilities review, Microsoft recognized the need to deploy a specialized Radio-over-IP platform that would allow GSOC operators to monitor and manage all of its different radio systems from a single dispatch position while providing full interoperability between these radio networks, its IP telephony systems, cellular phones and other broadcast/alerting technologies.

Just as importantly, GSOC operators had to have the ability to quickly share voice communications with local law enforcement and first responder organizations.

"Twisted Pair’s WAVE enables Microsoft’s Global Security Operation Centers to extend the capabilities of our existing communications systems across multiple global locations,” said Brian Tuskan, Senior Director of Microsoft Global Security. “The ability to connect different trunked radio systems underscores the power and flexibility of this unique software application.”

The rapidly-growing MOTOTRBO user community has long been asking for a software-based dispatch solution capable of taking full advantage of the rich voice and data capabilities offered by Motorola’s professional two-way radio system.  Until now, there has not been a true Radio-over-IP (RoIP) choice.

Between the few general purpose consoles that did not access any of MOTOTRBO’s data capability, and specialized telemetry systems that cannot be used for any other purpose, users were left wanting more.

Twisted Pair Solutions is changing all that.

Powered by the industry’s most trusted RoIP technology, WAVE for MOTOTRBO delivers a proven, cost-effective solution designed to take full advantage of the audio and data coming from a MOTOTRBO radio system.

Delivering radio traffic over a RoIP network takes a special skill set. Unlike hardware based analog audio providers who are attempting to migrate their technology to digital systems, WAVE was designed specifically for use in an IP environment.  That’s why WAVE is the de facto standard for RoIP deployments for the U.S. military, government agencies and a multitude of public and private organizations with a mission-critical communications requirement.

WAVE for MOTOTRBO is a software-based solution designed to eliminate the challenges of implementing RoIP.  It is designed specifically to take advantage of MOTOTRBO’s rich feature set, such as man down alarms, text messaging and GPS, by exposing all of the system’s features to the user via a user-friendly interface.  This same interface allows console operators to set-up and participate in private, group or broadcast calls to MOTOTRBO radio users, or to interface with an analog or IP phone  system – another unique capability not currently available without using WAVE with a MOTOTRBO system.

One of the many advantages of deploying a digital radio system such as MOTOTRBO is to take advantage of all of the data that is associated with the audio. For example, using WAVE for MOTOTRBO a dispatcher is notified each time a handset is turned on or offering a comprehensive view of who is available and who is not. GPS coordinates allow the dispatcher to immediately see where the user is on a map.  Text messaging to and from individual handsets is also possible.

A highly cost-effective pre-packaged WAVE for MOTOTRBO offering is available through MOTOTRBO Authorized resellers.  The package includes a pre-configured software and support bundle for quick and easy installation and is competitively priced to meet MOTOTRBO user demand for a proven RoIP dispatch capability.
